Constelación ORCA
This is a special work created to celebrate the 30th anniversary of legendary free jazz and experimental free improvisation music club Café Jazzorca, in Mexico City, pioneered by Mexican free jazz visionary Germán Bringas since 1993. I conceived the idea of composing new pieces for small ensembles that encompass the wide diversity of language and forms within Creative Music, free improvisation, composition, and to a certain extent, indeterminacy and chance as conceived by 20th Century contemporary composers.
I created what I call "Piezas-Mapas" (map-pieces), conceived as relatively simple inductive graphic scores that integrate mappings for collective improvisation. These pieces were specifically written with local musician groups in mind, and the compositional process involved extracting materials from recorded performances we had together, from which I created these evolving "piezas-mapas" as an ongoing unfolding language.
The entire project is visualized as a constellation, comprising 37 new pieces. The full 2023 project was organized into 3 Iterations, each with 3 sessions and 2 sets per session, performing 4 "piezas-mapas" every night, a total of 12 new works per Iteration. The singularity of my work in this context lies in creating scores that require only a brief sight-reading explanation before each set with no prior rehearsal. The interesting aspect is the quality of tension and intention we need to focus on in order to "play it right." While perfection was never achieved, the resulting music was unbelievably fresh, complex, random, surprising, and based on the audience's response, truly magical in every sense.

I create POLLOCK tambores pintores as a composition research performance improvisation project. Conceived as a trilogy for extended/prepared drum set-percussion ensemble nonet. The work is comprised by three Compositional Matrices on which I research specific elements contained in my percussive phenomenology study work:

This project is a special reunion to create a piece inspired by and developed on Max Ernst "A Week of Kindness" . The work is conceived as an ongoing work in process –sessions– , so for every performance I write a new score based on the evolution of the precedent and so on, always evolving; there may be also change in musicians, readers, dancers, actors, etc. The session I share here is session IV.
