Constelación ORCA

This work commemorates the 30th anniversary of Café Jazzorca, the iconic free jazz and experimental improvisation venue in Mexico City, founded by the visionary Germán Bringas in 1993. I envisioned composing new pieces for small ensembles that reflect the rich diversity of Creative Music, free improvisation, composition, and the elements of indeterminacy inspired by 20th-century contemporary composers who in one way or another influenced as well as were influenced by the great African American Creative Music.
The project is visualized as a constellation of 40 new pieces, structured into three Iterations, each consisting of three Sessions with two sets per session, featuring four "piezas-mapas" each night—totaling 12 new works per Iteration. The uniqueness of my approach lies in crafting scores that require only a brief sight-reading explanation before each set, with no prior rehearsal. This fosters a dynamic tension and intention essential for "playing it right." While perfection was elusive, the resulting music was strikingly fresh, intricate, and spontaneous, creating a truly magical experience for the audience.
