Multidimensional percussive perspectives have been shaping the world of drumming music and rhythm practices in profound ways. Percussing, rhythm, time, sound, space, improvisation, all have creatively influenced human perception, cognition, collective musical thinking, and our relationship with musical consciousness and sound awareness – evolving significantly over the past few decades. My compositional and performative work concentrates on the creation and realization of transdisciplinary projects. My work draws from a multitude of lived experiences and ongoing research practices spanning over 40 years of drumming. It aims to transcend contemporary materialism and societal trends, cultivating innovative poetic rhythmic languages that elevate planetary perception, creation and Self expression. As a natural-born educator and lifelong autodidact, I continuously expand beyond conventional boundaries, embodying the profound changes of our present world. With formal training in jazz, contemporary orchestral percussion, and roots-origin drumming traditions, coupled with a fervent exploration of improvisation and experimental artistic practices, I have developed a rich multidimensional palette of languages, techniques, and compositional frameworks. My current focus examines the reciprocal relationships between the percussive body and its environment, studying the psychomotor, cognitive, and proprioceptive qualities within creative compositional play and their evolution in individual identity development. Through this multiversal approach, rooted in diverse experiences and continuous searches, I aim to cultivate new paradigms of percussive thought and higher states of planetary expression. Throughout my career, I have had unique professional opportunities performing and collaborating with highly esteemed international artists, including Karl Berger, Christian Wolff, Robyn Schulkowsky, Thollem McDonas, Andrew Cyrille, Ramon Lopez, Vinny Golia, Warren Smith, Alvin Fielder, Ute Wasserman, and many many others. In 2017, I founded APIL-PUBS in Mexico City, an independent publishing house for my own works, including now a ten-book series for drum-set chamber music ensemble workshops, a method on melodic jazz polymetric multi-directional progressive drumming, and a volume on advanced snare drum techniques. Two new works are coming. My involvement in the arts extends to active collaborations, art and performance residencies, private teaching, workshops, composing, creating ensemble projects and regular appearances at contemporary music festivals and concert series. Some notable events include IF IICSI, CMS, Fusebox, CalArts, 17 Instituto Archipiélago Crítico, XXXIII Coloquio Internacional, Aleph, Canicas, Umbral, Aural, SITE Santa Fe, UMBRAL, No Idea, Nameless Sound, Encuentro Internacional de Jazz y Música Viva, Cha´ak´ab Paaxil, PercuSonidos/PASIC, Relincha, Mediarte, Soup & Sound, Transplanted Roots: Percussion Research Symposium, OMI, among others. My most recent work in 2023 was Constelación ORCA, a series of forty graphic map-pieces for free jazz/improvisers small ensembles, developed over a year-long residency at Café Jazzorca in Mexico City. Currently, I am working on the continuation of this project with a new large-ensemble work entitled Orcana, featuring a full 90-minute graphic score. I´m on recording releases on labels such as Lexical Records, Albany Records, Amirani Records, Relative Pitch, Edgetone Records, and Non Jazz.
